The 2019 Vintage:
It was a hot dry growing season. Significant rain events in November and December 2018 helped to sustain the vines through January and February 2019. The dry-grown Mourvèdre stood up beautifully under these conditions. The bunches were extremely well formed and of excellent quality.
65% of the fruit was Estate grown, sourced from north-west facing slopes of the Dowd’s Lane vineyard. The Estate vines are un-irrigated and very low yielding, at around than 1.2 tonne to the acre. They are cane-pruned by hand and wrapped to a single wire trellis to encourage some bunch shading during the heat of summer. The remaining 35% of the fruit was sourced from higher yielding irrigated vines from a northern vineyard in the Heathcote region.
The estate fruit was harvested by hand, destemmed, crushed and pressed immediately. The non-estate fruit was destemmed, crushed and left on skins for a few hours before being pumped off to ferment off-skins. The two components were blended just prior to bottling.13.64
