Tellurian 2018 Tranter Magnum

Tribute to pioneering Australians, in particular returned soldier George Edwin Tranter who once owned our lands. First made in 2008, this medium to full-bodied shiraz showcases Heathcote’s trademark minerality, depth of flavour, intensity, structure and complexity. Magnums tend to last in the cellar for longer than standard bottles, so we expect this will develop nicely over 10-15 years.

WINEMAKER NOTES

Bright crimson. Intense aromas of dark plum and blackberry combine with sweet vanilla bean, spice and a flinty, savoury edge. Complex dark fruits and spice combine with fine grained tannins, lovely texture. Exceptional length.

VINEYARD

Block 3 of our Tellurian vineyard, in Tranter Rd, Toolleen,  grown in Cambrian soils formed over 500 million-years. Deep, rich, decomposed greenstone rock with soil depths up to 2m allow roots to reach deep, while relatively low fertility controls vigour and yield.

VINTAGE

After the cooler conditions of the 2017 season, 2018 saw the return of the warm dry conditions that have been more typical in recent years. Vintage started in early February and went through to mid-March. Despite being warm, overall the lead up to harvest avoided excessive heat leading to wines with good ripeness and fruit expression.

WINEMAKING

Fermented in a combination of concrete, 5000L French oak and stainless steel open fermenters, with pneumatic plunging and pump overs once a day, with some whole bunches (10-15% in some ferments). Batches remained on skins for 12-14 days. Matured for 12 months prior to blending, in a combination of French oak puncheons, demi-muids and barriques.
