Red wine

Sanguine Estate 2019 (Back Vintage) Progeny Shiraz

Very dense bright purple hue. Ripe rich plum and cherries with a slightly smoky herbaceous edge. Very alluring rich fruit comes through in volume on the palate, wonderfully textured with soft tannins and a very long sweet fruit finish.

Mark Hunter Winemaker

It is clear that we have here a shiraz specialist who pays close attention to style and quality at every price point. A $25 shiraz, Progeny hits above its weight in complexity and fruit vibrancy, all with just a relatively light dusting of oak (9 months in French oak and only 10% new). A serious wine, deep, impenetrable ‘Heathcote purple’ in hue. Hits high notes of violets, blackberry, briar, bramble and spice. Oak is ne’er to be seen, but its warm, textural affect on the palate is. A hint of mint gives you a glimpse of the local terroir. Delicious. JP 14.8% alc. 95/100 Click here for review

Jeni Port – Halliday Wine Companion

This wine always over-delivers at the price point. Spicy red berry aromas flow through to a palate of length, power and structure. Regionality and varietal character are very much to the fore. Winewise Championship

Vintage Overview

A relatively dry winter was followed by some useful spring rain. The vines grew well early in part thanks to a healthy end of 2018 vintage providing lots of stored energy. January and February were relentlessly hot and dry, bringing on harvest early and fast paced. An early start to harvest always makes me nervous as the sugars are accumulating faster than the preferred flavour profile, sometimes resulting in high alcohol with green characters. We got started earlier than normal but thankfully all the flavour was there resulting in a very special vintage with deeply concentrated wines.

Winemaking

We utilize traditional winemaking practices such as small fermentation tanks, natural fermentation (i.e. no yeast additions) and gravity feeding. Whilst this can be quite labour intensive, we believe it ensures the preservation of natural fruit flavours and the Heathcote terroir character. As with all varieties produced at Sanguine Estate, the grapes were destemmed, lightly crushed and then naturally fermented with wild indigenous yeasts in small open fermenters. The wine is then transferred via gravity (to avoid pump shock) to predominantly French oak barriques (approximately 15% new) and left to mature for approximately 12 months.
